Top Gun 3 Release Date, Cast, Plot & Everything You Need To Know

Who would have imagined that Top Gun: Maverick would become as well-liked by critics as it did? The long-delayed sequel presently has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We gave it four stars.

It’s difficult to envision a third Top Gun movie not being approved given all of its critical success. While it took 36 years to produce Top Gun 2, we feel reasonably confident in predicting that if a third movie does happen—and keep in mind, nothing has been confirmed—it won’t take another three decades.

But if a third Top Gun film were to be produced, here are some rumors concerning the actors, story, and other details. The following contains spoilers, so if you haven’t seen Maverick yet.

Plot Of Top Gun 3

Last warning for Top Gun 2 spoilers! Similar to its predecessor, Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t set any concrete goals for the sequel, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t drama to be mined in the film’s events.

In a nutshell, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returned to Top Gun to assist in the training of a group of pilots in order to aid them in completing a very challenging mission: blowing up a nuclear plant in a highly inaccessible location.

Naturally, after much deliberation, it is agreed that Maverick will be in charge of the pilots. On his crew is none other than Rooster Bradshaw, the son of his sadly deceased best buddy Goose.

The conflicted relationship between Rooster and Maverick is the main source of tension throughout the movie, but don’t worry, everything works out in the end.

In addition to flying the operation successfully, no one dies thanks to the Top Gun pilots. Additionally, Pete meets up with Penny (Jennifer Connelly), the love of his life, and they figuratively ride off into the sunset.

All of this suggests that there is no concrete rationale for why a third film couldn’t bring us back to Top Gun with Pete. It’s exceedingly improbable that Top Gun 2’s events will be duplicated.

In Top Gun: Maverick, it appeared that Pete Maverick’s final mission would be his. After all, he had been taken out of commission once before by his superior “Cyclone” (Jon Hamm), only to return to flying duty by the use of a ploy.

However, a third film may explore Maverick’s possible retirement and subsequent difficulties adjusting to civilian life.

When could Top Gun 3 Come out?

Tom Cruise would be 89 years old by then, so let’s hope not in 36 years. We doubt that Top Gun 3 will follow in Harrison Ford’s footsteps, who was able to continue shooting Indiana Jones movies until he was 80.

There’s always a potential that Top Gun: Maverick’s success will lead to the release of a new Top Gun film sooner rather than later, but for the time being, everything is just conjecture. For all we know, another 36 years may lie ahead!

Top Gun 3 Cast

Top Gun is difficult to imagine without the man himself, but you can never be too careful. The subject of a future movie might be Miles Teller’s Rooster. Since Val Kilmer’s character, Ice Man, was killed off, he will no longer be playing the part.

There’s no denying that Kilmer or another member of the original Top Gun cast may appear in a flashback given the sparse usage of vintage Top Gun footage in Top Gun: Maverick. As for the rest.

There’s nothing stopping Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Monica Barbaro, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis, Manny Jacinto, or Bashir Salahuddin from returning.

This is especially true if a third movie focuses on Maverick’s adjustment to civilian life and, uh, step-fatherhood.
